The group exists to promote club cruises, to enable us to share expertise and experiences, and most importantly to encourage members to make new friends.
Our cruises usually incorporate some sort of activity – a meal out, a DIY barbecue, a raft up party, beach games or a walk.
Events are co-ordinated by the cruising committee chaired by Phil Ranner and also consisting of Don Smith, Angela Bayly, Dave Stinton and Brian Edmonds.
Our aims are to:
The Yahoo Forum that we have been using since December 2002 is now linked to the club website and it is hoped that it will be used by all club members
The Yahoo forum helps us to stay in touch, plan events, send newsletters, share photographs and files, discuss trips and much more.
For those that do not want to receive the email correspondence there is an option to restrict membership to web access only. All of the correspondence can still be read on the associated Yahoo web site.
The Yahoo forum membership is controlled; membership is restricted to club members and invited guests.
To join, send an email to forum@pwllhelisailingclub.co.uk giving your membership number and name as given in your club membership.
The Gimblet Rock Trophy is awarded annually to a member for something significant within the cruising environment. The Passage Cup is awarded in recognition of a significant passage.
The Gimblet Rock Trophy was awarded to Glen and Louise Mitton . For the second summer ‘BETTER INTENTIONS’ has not been seen at Pwllheli – This year it cruised to Scotland and was based in the Clyde Estuary for the season..
The passage cup was awarded to Dave Bayly. ‘JANGLE’ has now been away from Pwllheli for two seasons and there seems to be no plans for its return in the foreseeable future. Dave has sailed about 2000 miles this year – much of it solo.
Fun prizes were awarded to John and Brenda (Sovereign), Eric and Liz (Ce’st Moi) Peter and Mary (Beyond Malhallah) Dave and Janice (Hannah Lou) and Keith (Opal).
There must be many cruises by club members that we never hear about. Please share your experiences and plans with the group
We had a new shape to our programme for 2007 with a lot fewer trips to local (drying out) harbours. This was in response to our changing membership which used to have many who were happy with a drying harbour wall. Some are now away on long term cruises, some have changed to deep keel boats and others have left us.
Our members did, however, travel far and wide, they kept in touch and several met while on their cruises. Some cruised in Brittany, in Portugal and Spain, in Scotland and many parts of Ireland and the Irish Sea. We did suffer from poor weather and many of our members enjoyed extended stays in various harbours!
As in 2007 we will concentrate on the early season and add further trips if these are successful.

Indicative tide times are shown on some of the club cruises. Please check them.
Some of the best trips are arranged at the last minute when there is more confidence in the conditions. A group trip can be more fun. Please make use of the Yahoo forum as well as the club notice board and our Friday evenings in the bar. Please keep in touch and contribute to our exchange of information.
Have you considered notifying others of your intended passages? Other club members may be planning a similar passage and you may consider loosely cruising in company, make contact while on passage orsimply meeting for a drink at some harbour or anchorage. We are not looking for members to lead a cruise in company. Each boat will be responsible for all its own arrangements. It would be good if members with similar plans could swap ideas. It may well be worth talking to members who have been there before or who may have similar plans.
How about using the club forum to share your ideas, plans and aspirations.
We know of some intended trips that are planned by members including:
“For those who don't already know, we have a new boat on order: "Best Intention" is a Wauquiez Pilot Saloon 41 and is due to be handed over to us in early March 08 at Ardrossan. We are spending the first six months in Clyde marina, so she won't be seen in Pwllheli until around September time. We have also entered for the Classic Malts in July, which sounds like real fun. We do hope to see as many people as possible from Pwllheli up in the Clyde next season - for anyone who hasn't been, it is well worth the effort. Do look us up if you are in the area.”
“Hope to leave Pwllheli sometime after the early May Bank Holiday and do some of the North coast of Ireland. Mary will join on the trip down the Irish East coast and then a few weeks in the South West finishing up at ‘Cork week’ and returning to Pwllheli mid to late July.”
“We are thinking of a June trip to Northern Ireland and Southern Scotland”.
If you wish to discuss any of the above and do not know the skipper please use our forum or contatct a member of the cruising sub committee

You are reminded that the decision on whether to take part in any cruise and the responsibility for the safety of the boat and its crew is that of the individual skipper. Neither PSC, nor the organisers can be held responsible.
Always comply with the safety requirements commensurate with the sea area in which you intend to cruise.
You are strongly advised to study the coastguard site at www.mcga.gov.uk and to take note of the recommendations of the MCA publication SOLAS V
The full SOLAS V text is
available on the MCA
website.
Do not assume that because you are in company with other vessels you are safer. In adverse weather it is “every man for himself” to a large extent. Other yachts may not be able to assist you. Adverse weather has the unpleasant habit of arriving once you are at sea.
Help the coastguard help you by completing the form CG66 (safety identification scheme) Send the completed form to the coastguard or fill it in on line at https://mcanet.mcga.gov.uk/public/cg66/
As appropriate inform the coastguard of your passage plan and crew details.
PLEASE NOTE. It is a condition of the club’s insurance policy that the Cruising Section should make it clear to their members participating in any event that it is the participants’ own responsibility to check weather forecasts and decide whether conditions are suitable to set off.
