During the Easter weeekend, Chris Jones, Gethin Owen and Iago Davies travelled to Braassermermeer in the Netherlands to compete in the annual Easter Regatta as members of the GBR Optimist team. 210 sailors were invited to compete from 12 countries. Two days of training were led by head coach, Alan Williams, before the regatta started for real on Good Friday. In the last practice race against team USA, Iago crossed the line first with Gethin  following in second.  “Good Job!” was the shout from the USA support yacht.

The qualifiaction series comprised of three days of racing in very

cold conditions. An Oyster 42 was spotted ice breaking in the marina before the launch on Friday morning.  By the end of the series, all three Pwllheli sailors had qualified for the Gold Fleet for the final day of racing. The final day saw two very competitive races and when all scores were processed, Iago finished in 23rd, Gethin in 24th and Chris in 47th place. Individual highlights included a bullet for Chris in the first race on Sunday, a 4th for Gethin in the last Sunday race and a 5th place for Iago in the final Gold fleet race. European Champion ,  Stijn Paardekooper  from the Netherlands, lifted the large Egg shaped trophy.

Britain won the prize for team with the lowest combined scores.

The boys will be competing next at the Welsh Youth Championships in Pwllheli at the end of April. They will then head for Weymouth in May to take part in the Optimist Selection series for Worlds and European teams. Good luck Boys!
