Optimist Selection Trials. |

The Mailspeed Marine Regatta Hosted by Pwllheli Sailing Club was held on Saturday 1st May to Monday 3rd May and incorporated the Optimist GBR Team Selection Trials. There were 78 comptitors and 13 races were sailed.
A mixed pair of long weekends for the GBR Team Selection Trials provided a light wind start for the pond sailors at Weymouth, and some equally challenging (but different) strong wind conditions at Pwllheli.
Pwllheli offered us no stable wind on Saturday - we ended up testign the sailors knowledge of the numeral pennants as AP over 2 was hoisted at 10:15. The third 420 selector was also at Pwllheli - and they hoisted AP over 1 alongside us - their published start being 1 hour later than the IOCA start. Thi started a trend for the next few hours: IOCA hoisted AP over 3, 420 hoist AP over 2 - culminating in AP over 6, followed by AP over A.
Sunday was better. Much better. 18kts gusting 27 from the North. Oscillating between the valleys, there was sufficient stability for PRO to set a course and get part 2 underway. Three races in these conditions saw a change in the leader board, with Callum posting 2 bullets. With 3 races in the can, and several tired sailors on the water, t'management called it a day.
Monday was similar to Sunday - but not quite so extreme. A more gentlemanly 12 - 15kts saw some more good racing. Final scores on the doors for Scotland: Callum 7th, Ali 16th, and Jamie 19th. With 3 girls required to make the female contingent for the Europeans Team (yes, it is separate boys and girls competitions) there were some anxious moments whilst waiting to hear from the Selectors.
