Jonathon, Pentanemos and the ARC

This year I inherited a Contessa 32 (Co 32) which the family has owned since new in 1975. The boat built by Jeremy Rogers of Lymmington has a wonderful history, the Contessa class has been around pretty much every route in the world and are a favourite with day sailors, cruisers and racers alike due to their good handling, great performance coupled with excellent stability and safety features.  Today the fleet still remains competitive and the first pick if you can get one for amateurs and solo sailors alike.Neil & Jonathon on Pentanemos

The Contessa 32 in question was bought by my grandfather in 1975 and was named Pentanemos, which is Greek for ‘five winds’. The story behind this is that there are four winds North, South, West, East and thus Pentanemos is the fifth. Pentanemos was passed down to my dad who unfortunately passed away due to a heart attack on the last race of Tobago Race Week this February. We have enjoyed sailing at Pwllheli sailing club since the marina was first constructed. We spoke about sailing the world together all my life so in February at the funeral I set down the gauntlet. Now the only third generation Co32 in existence I have decided to sail her around the world starting with the Arc. The crew are Will Davidson, a friend from UKSA and Neil Kefford, a fine friend who’s commitment and support have made this dream possible. Our friendship has grown closer since February.

This is my account of my trip as it happens. After 5 months of preparations with great help from Simon at Firmhelm, David at Rowlands, Tony Evans, and Jonathan of JKA.

Subject: CONGRATULATIONS PENTANEMOS

Dear all
The prize giving was held in St. Lucia last night and Pentanemos was awarded a prize for
3rd Place in her Class (H).

The lads were 18th overall in the cruising classes

And what is even more amazing is that were beaten by only 4 yachts of the invitation and Racing classes giving her 22nd overall in the all classes including the racing fleet. There were 210 yachts in the whole fleet.

This is quite an achievement when you consider that the autohelm packed up with 10 days to go and that they had to hand steer for more than 1500miles24hours a day

Whilst Jon didn’t win the bet with the skipper of “Diamonds for Ever”, an Elan 37 in the racing fleet, that they would beat them over the line he had the satisfaction of having won the corrected time battle by 35 hours.

I received a voice mail from Jon who was over the moon but sounded a little “tired and emotional”.

When they set out Jon said that he was doing this in memory of his Dad. I know that Jim would have been justifiably proud of Jon and his crew – Neil and Will ….. COME ON THE BOYS!!!!

Pentanemos - Final Thoughts

Subject: Final Thoughts

Skippers Blog: Andrew has asked all of us to write something about the emotions and psychological side of things before we arrive. What this trip has meant to us? What have we learned? What have we missed? How are we going to feel when crossing the line? All valid reaching questions that an endeavouring journalist would ask. I will answer as honestly as I possibly can.

My reason for this trip was to do an amazing adventure that Dad and I had always talked about doing together. I was doing this to honour him by my actions with the spirit of adventure that both us had in our hearts. The trip has given me a lot of time to reflect on the past years and has personally given me clarity in areas that were opaque to me. It has led me to understand the world in a way I did not see before leaving. I will leave this trip with more purpose and definitely more faith in my judgements and abilities. I hope Dad somewhere is smiling on the 'Old girl' as she passes the finish line.

As for what have I missed on this trip? Well it's not the answer you would expect obviously I miss my friends and family but we can't be with them all the time in adult life anyway. To be honest I truly have missed nothing; the simpler life, the lack of stress and materialism even the lack of land for weeks on end has been enjoyable and all too natural. I would even say after leaving home this to me has been the most homely place I have felt settled so far. To be honest I just want to keep going and not stop. I think there would be a mutiny though!! The plan to sail around the world though remains unchanged.

I am unsure how I am to feel when crossing the finish line I really don't know. I am unsure if I am to react emotionally because of how much this means to me because of Dad, or be ecstatic with the jubilation of crossing the line or will be dumbfounded by the question that I am sure will broach my mind 'What next?'. Either way on a basic level I will be looking forward to eating a burger off a plate (no dog bowl), having a cold beer and coke (yes indulge with two drinks at once), and seeing the friends and kindred spirits of this adventure with initial preference to the girls boat. Either way I will let you know.

One thing that I am sure about though is how lucky I feel to have shared this with Neil and Will. Both have worked so hard on this trip and have truly put their heart and soul into it they have given everything. They have both been diligent and acted as good sailors, gentlemen and above all friends. It has been an honour sailing with them.

Will final thoughts.

It was nearly eight months ago that I sat in the bar at work, watching the new flock of yachting students arriving and finding their feet ready for six months of study. I have seen many groups of students come and go through the doors, some have left as my friends, some have passed with barely a word spoken. As many sailors will tell you, much of your time when not on the water is spent, for good or evil in the pub, and it was in the pub that I first met and chatted to John. After a few beers he explained what he was doing, and I, on the off chance, mentioned that if there were any spare spaces I would be up for coming along (little did I know what I was getting myself in for).
As the months went by, John's preparations continued and I had near enough put the trip out of my mind, until one fine summers day, in the same pub as the first encounter, John turned round and said, if you still want the spot its yours. Only then did I start thinking about the fact that I might be heading across the pond, rather slowly, on a rather small boat, perfect I thought, who needs a fridge anyway.
As you have all read from the blogs, the trip has been quite remarkable (this is reflected in the interest from the assorted yachting press while in Las Palmas) and I had no idea quite the rollercoaster that we were in for when I said yes to the spot. For me it has been a dream come true, but also I hope, a stepping stone to more ocean sailing and long passages. What it will feel like to finally cross the finish line I do not know, I feel a sense of relief already as I see the miles steadily drop. I cannot wait to see our friends from other boats, to share there experiences and recount my own. One thing is for sure, a period of rest and relaxation is in order, plenty of cold beers, and showers more than once every four days, and a burger for good measure.
Obviously I have John to thank for this opportunity and I hope to sail more with him in the future, not only this winter but in the future legs of his circumnavigation, Also my mother for her constant and unwavering support of what I do whether I'm unsure of what direction to take or (more often) when I run out of money, and finally my sister, who is always the most pleased to hear from me and the most pleased to see me.

Will Davidson.

Neil

After thirty something years of sailing, and the dreams of around the world, perhaps an ocean could seem quite a small passage. But not for me.
This has been a strange journey:
The initial suggestion from Jon, to which I agreed to be"in".
The preparation over four months of long weekends doing all the things to the boat that had not been necessary for her past a regatta racer, too long and boring to detail.
The 'delivery' to Las Palmas - when at times I doubted the wisdom of it all.
The Passage from Las Palmas to St. Lucia - this has been without doubt, why I did the rest.

To have sailed the Atlantic, for me, is an achievement and one which I have enjoyed.
Before leaving Las Palmas I was eager to go 3 days before the start, likewise I am now ready for the finish 2 days early. I feel an excitement at completing the passage rather than the arrival in Rodney Bay. The whole thing has always been about the Atlantic crossing and not where we started from or were bound for. Crossing the line will denote the passage end.

I will always remember the encouragement from Julia even though I know she would rather I hadn't bothered, and from my Mum who bought a new computer so that she could track me all the way. My daughter, Victoria, and the grand kids, Olivia and Harry have also been following the progress. I am looking forward to seeing them all soon.

Dear Jon, Neil and Will

Well this is the last forecast you will need. I will continue to send them to Starfire until they arrive.

I really can't believe that it has been 10 weeks since you left Pwllheli to go to Cork on 30th Sept.

It would be great to get a blog from each of you of your final philosophical thoughts on the trip as you rush under the stars on the final leg to St. Lucia. You'll have to get Will to put finger to keyboard.

I am so pleased that you have achieved what you all set out to do. Well done.

Enjoy the last few hours before your livers have to take the punishment that undoubtedly you will give them.

I will do your stats later which I will send at 17:00 - 17:15 this afternoon

Dear all

This is classic; there must be at time in every transatlantic crossing where being in heaven just becomes a job!

Another uneventful day, at lunch time we had a conversation via vhf with a Dutch yacht on route to Barbados, they seemed very sympathetic with our hand steering plight. Only 530 miles left on the clock now.

As the finish line draws ever closer, the days seem to become less and less distinguishable, the night of the 4th and early morning of the 5th were marked by yet more lightning and a brief period of heavy rain, but as always, the sun reappeared in the morning making another hot day of belting sunshine. We also set our eyes upon a whale, (much to my satisfaction) and an argument as to what type of whale ensued (obviously we are all experts).

The night of the 5th becoming 6th was uneventful with no lightning but more periods of heavy rain. The general mood on the boat is good as we are making good time and the GPS is telling us we only have 680 miles left to go, which to us seems like nothing given the distance we have already covered. Conversation is regarding St Lucia and what we intend to do when we arrive, Rum, is the general consensus.

Message from STAR FIRE
Last 24 hours been very hard steering as sea state keeps throwing her of
course in to a broach. With a tiny rudder we are almost out of control. Now
reduced sail even further. Been on helm for 36 hours and had very little
sleep but we have less than 1000nm to go.

Neil’s Atlantic diary - 9.12.2009
Hi Folks,
We've got to the stage of talking quite glibly about 'only 299 Nm to go', When we left that was a long way to 'go'! Anyway, we were itching to leave Las Palmas 3 days before the start and we're ready to arrive in St Lucia right now.
Getting a bit more rain and variation in the wind which is a little frustrating but we should still arrive in 48 hours or so.
Starting to see a few commercial ships now so, hopefully, that means we are nearing civilisation. Not seeing many yachts, perhaps they have all gone without us.
Neil.
