Hi Folks,
Now deep into our white sails only part of the trip and making good times - well I think so, anyway.
Fishing, on the other hand, is a little less successful. We have had a few on board but all were volunteers and flew on rather than getting dragged onboard unceremoniously by a hook through the side of its' mouth.
Our next "target" is a waypoint we've created for the one thousand miles to go - we've promised ourselves a second Atlantic showering session when we reach it! There is a chance the wash might come earlier if the weather system ahead stays put until we get under it - the wash is needed and a day sooner would be good.
Helming is testing us and we really appreciate the work 'Winston' did during his rather short life. There will be no cat napping on watch without it being instantly obvious to all on board.
We are all settled with the current situation and upbeat with the prospect of a 19 day finish.
Love to all,
Neil &c.

Message from STARFIRE
our position is 16.41.33N 36.29.513W @ 2310 on the 2/12/2009.
now the good news,
we have a brand new rudder being made and all the damage that happened from the impact is covered by my insurance. so skeg removal/strengthening and reattachment, lift out, new rudder pintles and gudgeons, new self steering unit and all postage costs to St. Lucia.
Also Silverbear have now caught us and they are shadowing all the way.
Rudder is holding up o.k. but struggles below 4 knots as area is very small, but when we are above 6 knots we can use the tiller pilot.
Message to Pentanemos; sorry to hear about breakages, but keep on trucking, i want to see monumental beard designs. We should be there by the 13th or I will fit some hydrofoils at get a groove on.
I think this crossing is a test of our body and minds. Lost a winch handle and the jib halyard popped so had to climb the mast. I got battered and bruised from that. The roll is bad enough on deck Lol.
We shall keep trucking.

Dear Jon
It was great to speak with you and to hear that everyone is feeling happier.
Message from STARFIRE late last night - all's well
Interesting fact - At noon today you were in 5556 metres of water (more than
5 times the height of Mt Snowdon in Wales and 700 metres deeper than Mt Blanc in the Alps is high). I think that this is greatest depth for the trip and therefore you are now officially standing into shallow water!!!!!!

Will’s log 1st December
As john mentioned this morning, we have a new set up for the guy line on our spinnaker, unfortunately it only lasted till just after lunch time. Another all hands on deck moment to pull the wayward kite down. We all took a deep breath and decided to give it 24 hours before putting the kite back in the air. Although we all dream off making the best time possible to St Lucia, it is no use burning out the crew at the half way point.
We settled down for a beer and some food and had about twenty minutes of peace and smiles before the biggest disaster of the trip so far struck. Our brand new and very expensive autohelm (electronic Steering) decided to pack up and is unfortunately not repairable while on board. Although this may seem like a minor issue, for us, it is the end of our dreams for record time. Without it, and given the issues with our spinnaker, we can no longer use the kite as intensively as we have, if at all.
It is fair to say that the mood on board is deflated, a blow like this will cost us days, and although an extra day or two seems like little, for us it is huge.
But, it is the nature of all things at sea, all we can do is continue at the best speed possible and aim for the less than 20 day time period.
Enthusiastic as ever, Will.
Skippers Log
Hi all the crew are pulling their weight which is good. Hope all well at home. 164 miles noon to noon.
1 December 2009.
Another day of spinny running however last night the surf was 5 m and we were still carrying the kite. Due to the swell we could not autohelm so we changed rotas to 1:30 helm 3 hours off.
Today I am shattered as two days on the trot I have scooped a 4 hour - 5 hour shift by some means. My longest sleep in the last 7 days is 2:30 mins. The boat was so uncomfortable yesterday death rolling one way and another and getting knocked badly by waves. Saying that it was our doing as overnight we averaged 8 kts. Also I set a new trip record top speed off two waves with 12.8 knots. We are hoping our good time today will put us in good standing with the fleet. We are still unsure of our position as everyone seems to be so far North and they will need to drop down at some point to our Lat.
I blew out another guy today. Nothing is taking the strain that I am putting on it for very long I have now boshed up a totally new way of using guy ropes. Fingers crossed it holds.

Good Morning Andrew,
Thank you for your email. This was yesterday's report on Starfire:
"MRCC Falmouth has been in touch with both Starfire and Silver Bear, Starfire have fashioned a jury rudder and are now progressing satisfactorily to St Lucia Silver Bear are aware of this and have resumed their course to St Lucia too. They were still 110 Nm away from each other.
MRCC consider the matter closed and thank us for our help."
Kind regards,

Subject: 091130 The Home run and Weather Dear Lads
What a day yesterday! - only 1 mile off your best 24hour run. Well done. There is little significant variation in the weather either side of your projected course and I suggest that you lay a course DIRECT to St Lucia. I have noted a way point (WPT4) at 14 07.000N 60 56.500W. This will save another 28 miles! The stats below reflect this change.
Go for it and keep the "pedal to the metal"
Target distance = 168nm in 24hours
Jon - put garlic and bananas on the push pit in the hope that Neil and Will will want to try to sail faster to get away from their favourite fruit and veg!

Message from Starfire
sorry for the delay in sending our position. Just as i was about to send it we hit something at 8 knots. This snapped the rudder in half at the waterline and smashed all the gearing on the self steering. What a day. But we have built a new, half the size though; we are carrying on to St. Lucia though. Making 5.5 knots. position at 1200 was 17.37.235N 31.45.113W. was a fast 24 hours.

Additional note from Starfire received after message sent to Pentanemos
thanks for your efforts. just a real b------d that we have to ease right back. we are touching 6 knots now and again. i have let my dad know and he is fully aware. Silverbear is on her to shadow us. Thanks again. Hope to be in st. Lucia for 17th-18th. As long as this rudder holds up.
